Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

Oh yes, nothing like Bitches Brew!

I read on the last.fm comments that listening to this album for the first time is “akin to having your virginity taken”. Hilarious! Advice: don’t listen to listen.

The Truth Behind Save Local TV

I don’t watch much TV anymore, but what’s been popping up in advertising and arriving in the junk mail are messages of  “TV tax” and “Save Local TV”. Canadians are being fed the bullshit marketing campaign by cable operators to rally against broadcasters. I’d rather not take sides. This is for them to sort out, present a solution to us, the owners of the airwaves to which we should decide on the matter. If there isn’t a solution that satisfies us, WE will present you one. Or we’ll just take our money elsewhere.

Each side is trying to head fake you into getting angry at the other side while they reach in your front pocket and help themselves to your cash.

Here’s a video to help wrap your head around the issue.

It’s never been about helping you. So you have to help you. Ok you?

If it weren’t for news, I’d turn it off completely.

Facebook’s New Privacy Policy

There has been a lot of chatter about Facebook’s new stance on privacy. Ideally, they want to publicize all of our details for reasons only known for certain by them. A sound guess would be that they wish to push this information to advertisers to monetize their business. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you respect your users’ choices and rights.

Encrypted Emails with GnuPG, Enigmail and Thunderbird

These days it’s hard to tell who’s out for your information, but you could and probably should assume everyone is. Your emails get sent through a lot of different servers as part of the routing process to get the mail delivered. Since we have no way to verify that these servers are not collecting information or that their owners are honest, we must take the precautions ourselves by transferring the responsibility and trust away from those who may be negligent, ignorant or malicious.

Banking institutions take security and privacy very seriously since they are scrutinized by auditors, regulators and government. Information is treated as sensitive and any information regarding a client must be either verbally communicated or if electronically transmitted, encrypted. Although the encryption and email is a closed system within their institution (encryption methods are most likely proprietary and only work on the bank’s computers and software), they still practice a high level of safeguarding information. It really goes to show you really have no idea who is listening on the other end. If the banking institutions are that worried about even their own internal people, maybe we have a greater concern for protecting our own personal business.

Here’s a way for you to communicate with others using encrypted emails. We will be using tools which are multi-platform, so there is no real worry about it not working with certain setups. It is really really simple and you will have a sound mind that the information you intended for your recipient is ready by their eyes only, and no others.

On to the guide!

Nujabes - Metaphorical Music

Really been digging this album recently. It’s quite old, back from 2003. His music has influences from hip-hop, jazz and chillout. Some of you may remember his music from the anime Samurai Champloo.

Watching American Web Content

For anyone outside of the US, watching any sort of web content sucks. Many countries do not air a TV show or that particular show is held back several seasons which sucks when you’re on the internet since everyone wants to ruin it for everyone who hasn’t watched it by posting spoilers on big sites (Twitter, Digg).

Either you tinker with all the supposedly functioning workarounds, or you have a proxy, or get it through torrents. Those have been the most popular methods.

Goodbye WRC… ?

I’m a big fan of rally and always watched the World Rally Championship (WRC) religiously until this 2009 season. This was after the announcement that the WRC would be be moving to a new Super 2000 (S2000) car specification requirements for the coming 2010 season.

Some of the S2000 pertinent specs:

  • Max 2L displacement engines with max 8500 rpm
  • 3rd party supplied gearboxes and drivetrains
  • No excessive modification

Basically, no fun.

A lot of manufacturers who have participated in WRC would have to pretty much have to redesign their rally winning cars to fit a more strict and standardized bastardized criterion. Which is why they have left.

Give the finger to this weak organization. Don’t they know by now that viewers and fans want to feel and be excited? Not bored to death with cars meandering through a forest stage participating in a “race,” where the only difference between this car and the last is the drivers and their livery?

What happened to the true spirit of rally?

All this fan wants is to bring back Group B!
